At her local shelter, an 89-year-old dog lover has knitted 450 coats and blankets for pups there.
The news was shared in an Instagram post by Dogs Trust, a 127-year-old charity whose goal is to find homes for dogs throughout the UK, which wrote:
“Local dog lover Maisie Green aged 89 years hand knits blankets and dog coats for Dogs Trust Basildon.”
Green has hand-knitted a lot of sweaters and blankets for the dogs for years, and she says:
“I love knitting and I love dogs, so this combines both wonderfully. It takes me three days to knit a blanket and one day to knit a doggy coat.”

Local dog lover Maisie Green aged 89 years hand knits blankets and dog coats for Dogs Trust Basildon. 🐶 Over the years she has knitted an estimated 450 items for the dogs at the centre to enjoy. “It keeps me busy and I often like to knit whilst I watch television. I’m delighted to be helping the four-legged residents of the center in some way.”
The generous senior donates her knitted creations to the shelter three times annually. Her family drives her there and helps her unload each batch of sweaters and blankets, made for the adorable dogs she whole-heartedly loves.
She is one of the many volunteers who regularly help the shelter, whose Facebook page says:
“Dogs Trust is the UK’s largest dog welfare charity. Through its network of 20 Rehoming Centres across the UK (and now one in Ireland) the charity cares for over 16,000 stray, unwanted and abandoned dogs each year. Dogs Trust has a non-destruction policy, and will never put a healthy dog to sleep.”
In order to make their stay more comfortable, the Basildon Dogs Trust encourages locals to donate sweaters and blankets, and volunteer in the shelter, as everyone’s help is more than welcome.
